​Documentation of Folklore in the Context of Development in Three District Named Lohardaga, Palamau & Gumla of South Bihar (Now Jharlhand).

Major Issues Addressed

​

Development has also been the major issue for discussion in the tribal regions, where there is no meaning of welfare programme due to several regions. The projects and programmes implemented in this area, has no relation with the real demand and requirements of innocent people. Since, SULAXMI believes that planning must be prepared with proper respect to the local sentiments, so that schemes may be accepted from inner core of heart. Regrettably, the government is distributing ducks in drought prone areas and fisheries programme are being implemented in those areas where there is serious dry spell for the last two decades. Through documentation of folklore and public opinion, SULAXMI collected the real demands and requirements of local mass.
 

Objectives 

​

Documentation of idioms, ballads, songs, folk-tales and phrases to know the cultural aspects of this area. Traditional way of life, regards for religion and Forest Goddess and likes, indigenous knowledge of medicine, water wisdom, traditional political and economical system, man-forest relation, forest laws was the main parts of this study.   
 

Description of initiative in brief

​

It was an analysis to make the development process more useful and dynamic. The development must be reached on the doorsteps of the tribal and it would not be determined to make the indigenous people scapegoat of development process. The research team collected more than 300 songs, 120 idioms and 65 folk-tales including 110 conversations from the far off regions of targeted districts. The concerned experts analyzed the documented works following a workshop on folklore. The report has already been submitted.





Instant Relief

The 103 villagers were enlisted for this cause. They were given blanket to face winter wind, fatal for the poor population.

Objectives 

​

Solidarity is the prominent and dominant part of tribal society. The collection of proper feedback to make this part more substantial and dynamic so that rest of nation may be motivated that may lead for national integration. 
 

Description of initiative in brief

​

A 2-day workshop was organized in Badesandh village of district Palamau to know the culture, custom, believes, tradition, notion and diction of local tribal society. Solidarity is the part and parcel of any indigenous society that is inspiring for others. The tribals of Palamau participated in freedom-struggle from the very beginning. The participants recalled the deeds of King Medini Rai, the ruler of Palamau. They also nattered about their great customs and intense believes on Nature and God including spirit of brotherhood and fidelity. The number of participants was 134.

Description of initiative in brief

​

The forest laws, whether it was passed by Britons or democratic governments of India and customary rights of the tribals of different regions of India exclude them to enter in to the jungle and collect Minor Forest Produce (MFP) even in the presence of several provisions in the favour of tribals. They can not approach the forest. Different laws related with forests reject the freeness, frankness and traditional rights of the indigenous population. The participants discussed over all issues and concluded that the present system leaves them neglected in unconsciousness of serfdom. The participants came to know, the tribals have been caged under POTA in Jharkhand, if they violate the forest rules. The participants sent the proceedings and minutes including minutes to the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi. The number of participants was 65.

The dying wisdom of water is the soul of this study. In three provinces Bihar-Jharkhand-Madhya Pradesh, SULAXMI covers the exact picture of dying water bodies and the connected tradition. Man-water relation is the zest of this study. Besides, bio-diversity conservation and tribals’ right over natural resources is the prominent part of this study.

The whole research study was based on songs and stories which represent the real situation of the grass root people, who are the first target of the effects. With this study SULAXMI found many ballades which shows the real danger of life the people of the area are feeling. e.g.

The jungles we cherished are disappearing.
The water that runs in torrents is drying up.
The shade we rested in is no more there.
The medicines we used to make are all gone.
Here we are, afflicted by all kinds of diseases.
Oh, to whom shall we tell our misery?

Description of initiative in brief

​

This project aims to strengthen the traditional medicine system of Jharkhand and Orissa. It is well known fact that Jharkhand is the homeland of 33 tribal communities where as in Orissa has the largest number of tribes, as many as 62. In terms of percentage, they constitute and impressive 18 percent of the total population of both states. The tribal youth is getting opportunity to learn the skills of traditional medicines from their elders with the effort of SULAXMI. In addition to this, they are also being motivated for a new source for sustainable harvest from the re-generated land, thus potentially improving their livelihood. We are mainly concentrated to conserve the traditional knowledge of tribal medicine Doctors in the use of plants and herbs besides, only to revive and revitalize this knowledge and skills through collection of seeds of medicinal importance, process, store and raise them through the support of Panchayati Raj Institutions.

Description of initiative in brief

Clean water is essential for lively creature otherwise waterborne diseases may be proved epidemic to the village folk. Trust organized 5 camps in various villages of Kalahandi district and one Pani Yatra was organized in Bolangir district. Three awareness campaigns were organized in Jetpura, Gunawad and Utawad villages of Dhar district of MP and one awareness campaign in Sarengdag of Lohardga district of Jharkhand.





Conference to Sought Out the Reality

The conference was conducted to know the actual problems faced by tribals.

Objectives 

​

The objective of the entire programme was to take up the various problems by tribals, by their own, at large. On the bases of that discussion, to put recommendations to government officials who participated, in the conference.

Project details ​

​

It was a conference, conducted during time when SULAXMI was moving its initial steps. As, the core objective of the organization is the well being of the tribals. So, it was an effort to know the actualities of the tribal problems, to take up problem at large and to find some possible solution from government part. Forty tribals, representatives of department of tribal welfare, forest, State govt. and representatives of Organization were the participants of the conference.  

​

The issues which were discussed in the conference   were problems of indebtedness among tribals, lack of power for irrigation absence of adequate roads and transport want of record of right for land under occupation, land alienation, problems of indebtedness, lack of power for irrigation, absence of adequate roads and transport, seasonal migration to other places for wage-earning and lack of education and adequate scope for modernization, their exploitation by jungle officials was also discussed.

​

Entire discussion was in the front of officials; they also came to know about what the realities of tribal pain. Recommendations wee also made my SULAXMI; too official for tribal well-being. The soul of the mission was to take up the miserable realties to official; and the mission also touched its aim.





Workshop- A fight with Government to Secure Justice to Tribal Women

Tribals were unaware about the various privileges/rights given to them, by government. To make them conscious about that was mandatory, which was in workshop.

Project details ​

​

A workshop was conducted in Ranchi district, aiming to generate awareness & conscious among tribals for their rights & privileges in regard of their dwelling place, about their jungles, education of their children etc. By the means of open discussions, role-play, chart writings etc peoples were made to realize whats the truth and the injustice going with them.
 

Issues related to literacy, basic rights were discussed at length. Serious discussion was also made on the problems of Naxalism in jungle.





Two days legal Camp

​

Tribal people were very innocent, ignorant, uneducated. They were made fool very easily by government officials and  others, they dominate innocent tribals people for their government power & position. The issue was high ways.

Objectives 

​

To make the tribal people able to fight the atrocities of white collared people like police, foresters, and contractors.

​

Project details

​

It was a two-day seminar and large number of people participated in that. Circumstances enforced SULAXMI to conduct such camp among tribals. As, forest guards, contractors, & other administrative people were exploiting tribals by this or that way. Tribals were totally unaware about legislative measures like FIR, court ensure safety to SC, & other protective laws.
 

In the legal camp, some lawyers of prominence were also called and they also acknowledged tribal about all legislative protections.





Bee Keeping Programme

Project details
 

In Jharkhand, SULAXMI started bee-keeping programme in a remote tribal village named Arya, which is one of the backward villages of Chotanagpur region of this province, for the economic benefits of the poor villagers. SULAXMI granted very small amount as seed money to the local representatives of SULAXMI, who are already engaged in this work. Only ten tribal families were associated in the beginning of this programme.

​

SULAXMI bee trainers, provided training to tribals for bee keeping for 2 months. Then we had provided bee boxes, & bees to them. When the project was completed, our experts monitored it.
