Socio-economic status of Gadiya Lohars Resides in Delhi.

Objectives

To take out the socio-economic study of Gadiya Lohars resides in Delhi’s Footpath.

Description of initiative in brief

The trainees of Shanti niketan and Aligarh Muslim University took part in making this study till its height. There is a poor condition of Gadiya Lohars in Delhi as they are living on roadside. They have to leave in seven by six feet structure, made up of polythene sheets, iron rods, bamboo sticks etc. At some other sites, they have made mud houses. But the problem is that, government has not permitted them to stay. From time to time policeman and the personnel from Delhi Development Authority displaced them. Most of them have sold their Gaduliya, because of inability to keep them in Delhi. They suffer from asthma, skin diseases etc., due to continuous noise and air pollutions. Their young ones do not find space for playing. There is also a heavy risk of accidents. Absence of civic facilities adds to their problems. They have to use ‘public convenience’, which are in dilapidated condition. Some toilets are without doors, others are with half broken doors that are too unhygienic emitting foul smell. They have to fill their water-buckets from a tap, situated at the roadside. These public conveniences are not in any case safe for the females. Manoj Singh of Saria Rohilla expressed his anger, while giving information about these public conveniences. Due to poor socio-economic condition, most gadia lohars are not in a position to send their children to schools. Resultantly, they remain illiterate. Some children went to school but they are unable to pass even their high school. The drop out rate is very high.

There are many suggestions made to improve their condition are as under:

• Schedule Tribe status should be given to gadia lohars in Delhi.
• Strict measures should be adopted to provide them proper housing, without destroying their traditional profession.
• Ration cards and Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards should be provided to all gadia lohar families.
• Networking should be done among various gadia lohar bands.
• Educational facilities should be provided to their children.
